Filipino students achieve remarkable success by winning 25 medals in international math competitions

Filipino students have showcased their mathematical prowess by bringing home a total of 25 medals in recent international competitions held in Malaysia and Hong Kong. This remarkable achievement underscores the growing talent and dedication of Filipino students in the field of mathematics.

In the 2025 World Mathematics Olympiad held in Kuala Lumpur on July 26, the Philippine team claimed one gold, two silver, and four bronze medals. This prestigious event featured competitors from ten countries and territories, including China, the United States, Canada, and Vietnam, with the Philippines securing a commendable position despite tough competition. Heal Job Esio from Pangasinan Universal Institute emerged as the sole gold medalist for the Philippines, highlighting his exceptional skills in mathematics.

The silver medals were awarded to Sabrina Louis Cheong and Vincent Benito Chan of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, while the bronze medalists included Drew Antonio Joaquin from Precious International School, Hentj Job Esio of Pangasinan Universal Institute, Aaron Tyler Po from Grace Christian College, and Kenzie Timothy Ong from De La Salle University-Santiago Zobel. Additionally, four students received the Excellence in Math award: Franco Dee and Jana Eiran Sclamitao from San Beda College Alabang, Xian Jacob Alimpia from BHC Educational Institution, and Shaun Tyron Yu from Grace Christian College.

The Philippine team, trained by the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines, has been nurturing mathematically gifted students since 1995, and their ongoing support has significantly contributed to the success of these young mathematicians.

Furthermore, Filipino students excelled in the 2nd Mathematics Master Cup in Hong Kong on July 21 by winning three gold, four silver, and eleven bronze medals. The Philippine contingent secured third place overall in this 14-nation contest, trailing behind strong teams from China and Hong Kong. This consistent performance highlights the commitment and capabilities of Filipino students in international mathematics competitions.
