In a recent discussion, dentist Sam Bernardo cautioned the public about the potential risks associated with getting dental veneers, emphasizing that the decision to get veneers should be based on a patient’s individual situation. Veneers are thin, customizable shells made of porcelain or composite resin that are bonded to the front of teeth to enhance their appearance.
During an outreach program at Awesam Smile Dental Clinic in Marikina, Bernardo explained that veneers primarily serve aesthetic purposes but should only be considered after assessing the patient’s overall dental health. She noted, “Veneers are mostly for aesthetic purposes, but getting them depends on the patient’s situation. It is crucial to ensure that the bite is correct and speech is not affected.”
Bernardo recounted a recent experience where a patient wanted veneers after seeing a video on social media. “One time, a patient needed a cleaning but insisted on getting veneers because they saw it on TikTok. I had to educate her first,” she stated. She highlighted that underlying dental issues, such as gingivitis, need to be addressed prior to veneer placement. If these issues are not resolved, the veneers may ultimately fail.
The dentist stressed the importance of oral health education, noting that many people only seek dental care when experiencing pain. Increased awareness can significantly reduce dental issues over time. Bernardo further elaborated, “When someone suffers from a toothache, it can also lead to headaches, sleepless nights, and even difficulties with eating, which in turn affects overall health and mood.”
The statement comes at a time when cosmetic dentistry, particularly veneers, is gaining popularity, fueled by social media trends. However, professionals like Bernardo advise thorough evaluations and treatments to ensure that the patient’s dental health is stable before making cosmetic decisions. For long-lasting and healthy results, it is crucial to prioritize proper dental care and regular check-ups.
