Five arrested in Davao for posing as lawyers and offering illegal notary services

In a recent anti-crime operation in Davao City, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) apprehended five individuals who were allegedly impersonating lawyers and offering unauthorized notarial services. This operation was initiated following a formal request from Ferdinand Taglucop, the president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Davao, and Judge Rowena Apao-Adlawan.

The suspects were caught in a sting operation conducted on July 29, 2025, while operating along Bolton, Magallanes, and C.M. Recto streets. It was revealed that the individuals had no legal qualifications and were not recognized as commissioned notary publics. The NBI’s intervention aims to uphold the integrity of the legal profession and protect the public from fraudulent activities.

This incident underscores the importance of verifying the credentials of individuals offering legal services. Engaging with certified legal professionals is crucial to ensure both legal compliance and the protection of rights. Potential clients are advised to consult official sources and referral organizations when seeking legal assistance to avoid falling victim to scams.

The operation marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to combat legal malpractice and reinforce the standards within the legal field in the Philippines. Authorities continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals claiming to provide legal services without proper authorization.
